Published: al-Farghani and his Nilometer

Central Asia gave birth to many prominent medieval intellectuals like Ibn Sina (Avicenna), al-Biruni and al-Khwarizmi. One name, however, should ring a bell in Egypt: al-Farghani (Alfraganus), the mastermind of the famous Nilometer. Following the time he spent at Bayt al-Hikma (House of Wisdom) in Abbasid Baghdad, he finally moved to Egypt where he left one of his masterpieces.
